Political analyst Sola Kuti has ignited fresh debate ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general election, suggesting that Labour Party presidential hopeful Peter Obi could encounter governance realities akin to those experienced under former President Muhammadu Buhari if he wins the presidency.
Systemic Challenges Ahead
In a reflective commentary on Nigeria's political landscape, Kuti argued that the expectations voters place on leaders before elections often clash with the harsh realities of governance once they assume office. He emphasized that structural and institutional challenges would constrain any president, regardless of their personality or campaign promises.
Kuti compared the public's high hopes for Obi to the sentiments that surrounded Buhari before he became president. He stated: “Peter Obi, for me, is just another Buhari… an idealist, but not a realist.”
Governance Realities
The analyst pointed out that governance in Nigeria frequently forces leaders to depend on complex political and institutional arrangements once in power. Reflecting on the Buhari administration, Kuti noted that despite widespread expectations, the former president struggled to implement the sweeping reforms many had anticipated.
He remarked: “No matter how much I didn’t like Buhari, I realized that if someone like him with principles could go into government and achieve absolutely nothing.”
Kuti urged Nigerians to temper their expectations ahead of the 2027 election, warning that the country's deep-rooted political and institutional challenges would persist regardless of who occupies the presidency. He stressed that systemic issues, rather than individual leaders' intentions, often determine governance outcomes.
This analysis comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 polls, with various candidates positioning themselves for the race. The Labour Party's Peter Obi remains a prominent figure, but Kuti's comments serve as a cautionary reminder of the limitations any leader may face in Nigeria's complex political environment.
