Political economist Pat Utomi has declared that the just-concluded governorship election in Osun State has proven that evil has an expiry date. In a series of posts on X, Utomi, a former presidential candidate, said the election demonstrated that even the “unworthy” could be used to stop what he termed the “train.”
Utomi’s Reaction to Osun Election Outcome
Utomi’s comments come as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the results of the Osun State governorship election, which took place on Saturday. The election saw the defeat of the incumbent governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the victory of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In his posts, Utomi wrote: “If Osun elections proved a point, it is that evil has an expiry date and that even the unworthy can be used to stop the train.” He added, “Righteousness does indeed exalt a nation and its opposite is a reproach to any people.”
Warning to Politicians
Utomi’s remarks were not limited to the election result. He used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to politicians across the country. “Those who ignore the anger, hunger in the land and on the streets, and who believe their own propaganda, risk much in the rage of a people,” he said.
He also referenced the mood of the electorate, noting that many Nigerians watched as their once admired country became what he called the “now disgraced.” He said, “These people who watched them make their once admired country, the ‘now disgraced’ carry pain hard to forget. Consequences abound.”
Call to Defend Nigeria’s Future
Utomi concluded his posts with a call to action for citizens, stressing the importance of the nation’s future. “Nigeria is far too dear and the dreams of the founding fathers far too important for citizens to surrender in the face of narcissistic politicians,” he stated.
The election in Osun State was closely watched as a test of the political climate ahead of the 2023 general elections. Analysts believe the outcome could have implications for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition PDP.
