The Accord Party has officially unveiled Professor Christopher Imumolen as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, following a consensus vote during the party's National Presidential Primary Election held in Lagos. National Secretary Muktar Abdullah announced this in a statement to journalists in Abuja, describing Imumolen's emergence as evidence of widespread support and the party's commitment to offering Nigerians a credible leadership alternative.
Party's Statement on Imumolen's Candidature
According to Abdullah, the primary election reflected unified party support across national, regional, and generational lines. The statement emphasized that the Accord Party is determined to chart a new, progressive path for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.
Hashim Solidarity Movement Disputes Outcome
Meanwhile, the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement has rejected the party's decision, alleging external political interference aimed at destabilizing the party. The group insists that Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim remains the duly elected presidential candidate, citing a legitimate internal process that involved nationwide consultations and resource mobilization since Hashim joined the party in March 2026.
The movement claimed that party leadership had repeatedly assured Hashim of compliance with the Electoral Act and internal guidelines. It also alleged that external actors sought to influence the primary to prevent the party from fielding a candidate in 2027.
Broader Political Context
The group linked the dispute to a broader trend of factional conflicts in Nigerian political parties, citing similar issues in the ADC, PDP, and Labour Party. It argued that strong opposition candidates often face internal sabotage orchestrated by forces seeking to limit credible competition against the incumbent administration.
PRP Confirms Donald Duke's Candidature
In a related development, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) confirmed that its 2027 presidential candidate, Donald Duke, met all requirements for the flag bearer position. National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed clarified during an interview on Arise Television's 'Morning Show' that Duke applied, underwent screening, and complied with all party processes.
