The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a strong condemnation following a violent disruption of its Transition Committee Members (TCMs) inauguration ceremony in Maiduguri, Borno State. The party has labeled the incident a direct assault on democratic processes and constitutional rights.
An Orchestrated Attack on Democratic Rights
The condemnation was formally delivered on Friday by Alhaji Ali Bukar Wurge, the Chairman of the ADC's Transition, Registration and Mobilisation Committee (TRMC) in Borno State. Speaking during a press briefing in Maiduguri, Wurge stated that the attack was a blatant violation of the party's internal democratic process.
He asserted that the violence was a calculated attempt to suppress opposition activities within the state. The attack targeted the inauguration event where members were to democratically elect leaders at both the state and local government levels. Wurge described the perpetrators' motives as an effort to "stifle and frustrate" the party's legitimate activities.
Violence Beyond Protest: A Threat to Governance
Alhaji Wurge was emphatic that the events of Friday, January 17, 2026, transcended a mere protest. He characterized the incident as an organized act of political terrorism.
"This was not a protest, but an orchestrated violence against democracy and good governance, denying the people the right to elect their leaders in Borno State," Wurge declared. He further accused the attackers of being dozens of thugs who acted on the orders of a political despot determined to silence opposing voices.
"This was born out of blood and wreckage of democracy by those who claim to uphold and practise it," he added, highlighting the hypocrisy of the act.
ADC's Firm Stance and Call for Order
In his statement, Wurge made it clear that the ADC views this attack as a severe threat to the foundational principles of orderly democratic transition. The party strongly denounces what it calls "cowardly acts of political terrorism orchestrated by desperate politicians and their criminal syndicates."
The incident underscores ongoing tensions in the political landscape of Borno State, where opposition parties face challenges in conducting their affairs. The ADC's public condemnation serves as both a protest against the violence and a reaffirmation of its commitment to pursue its democratic rights and processes, despite intimidation.
