Amaechi Lists Credentials in Bid for ADC Presidential Ticket

Former Rivers State governor and ex-transport minister Rotimi Amaechi has positioned himself as a top contender for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing decades of public service and campaign leadership. Speaking at a party town hall in Lagos on Thursday, April 30, Amaechi urged delegates to judge him on his record rather than endorsements.

Amaechi Appeals for Unity After Supreme Court Ruling

Amaechi praised the recent Supreme Court decision, calling it a victory for the ADC and its supporters. He thanked party leaders and legal teams for their collective effort, stating that the outcome reflected “the voice of Nigerians” after a period of anxiety within the party. He emphasized the need for unity moving forward.

Experience and Competence as Key Factors

Turning to his own credentials, Amaechi highlighted his roles as governor, minister, and former speaker, asserting that he is the most experienced politician among the aspirants. “I seem to be the most experienced politician amongst those contesting,” he said, referencing his role in opposition coalition-building that led to a federal power transfer. However, he cautioned that long years in politics do not guarantee effective leadership, urging delegates to prioritize competence. “There are those who are experienced and still cannot govern Nigeria,” he added.

Amaechi Criticises Tinubu Government on Insecurity

On security, Amaechi made strong claims about his proven track record in tackling insecurity during his tenure. He criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for failing to take responsibility and shifting blame. “If he can’t handle it, let him come down. We will take over,” Amaechi declared, signaling his readiness to contest for the presidency.

Building Momentum Ahead of Primaries

The Lagos town hall marked one of Amaechi’s most direct appeals to ADC stakeholders, combining a defense of his record with sharp critiques of the current government. As the party approaches its presidential primaries, the race among aspirants is intensifying, with Amaechi positioning himself as a leading candidate.
