The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State has officially kicked off a digital membership registration drive. This strategic move is designed to prepare the party for its internal primaries in 2026 and the crucial 2027 general elections.
Top Party Leaders Lead by Example
The electronic registration exercise was formally approved during a meeting of the party's State Executive Council at the APC secretariat in Sokoto. The rollout saw immediate participation from the party's most prominent figures. Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, a former governor and influential political leader, was among the first to be registered.
He was joined by the State Deputy Governor, Engr. Idris Muhammad Gobir. Other high-profile members who participated include the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, the Minister of State for Works, Barr. Muhammad Bello Goronyo, and Ambassador-designate, Hon. Kulu Haruna Abubakar.
A Timely Reform for Electoral Strength
Speaking after the process, Senator Wamakko praised the state leadership for their dedication to building a stronger APC. He described the e-registration initiative as a timely reform that would strategically position the party for future victories. Wamakko linked the exercise to the APC's broader agenda of improving the welfare of Nigerians.
"The APC will continue to grow stronger, especially with the steady influx of members from opposition parties, notably the PDP," Wamakko stated. He emphasized that "This registration exercise will give us a clear and credible record of our strength in Sokoto State."
Building a Verifiable Membership Database
The State Chairman of the APC, Hon. Isa Sadiq Achida, explained that the drive aligns with the party's national objective of strengthening internal democracy. He revealed that executive council members have received special training to manage the new system effectively.
Computer experts and trained enumerators have been deployed across all local government areas to ensure the process is smooth and transparent. Achida noted that the electronic system will allow the party to accurately document its members before, during, and after the election cycles.
In a related political development, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has publicly appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The plea, made by State Chairman Suleiman Hashim Dungurawa, urges the governor to remain in the NNPP and disregard growing speculation about a potential defection to the APC.
