Atiku Abubakar Officially Joins ADC, Bolstering 2027 Election Prospects
Atiku Abubakar Officially Joins ADC Party

In a significant development for Nigeria's political landscape, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), strengthening the party's position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Formal Declaration Ends Months of Speculation

The political move was confirmed by ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who described Atiku's membership as a confidence booster for the party. Abdullahi revealed that the former Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate had always been a key member of their coalition, with his Monday declaration in Yola representing merely a formality.

"His taking the membership card is only a formality, but it is an important one that bolsters our confidence," Abdullahi stated during an interview in Abuja.

Political Background and Transition

Atiku Abubakar, who served as Nigeria's Vice President from 1999 to 2007, had been the PDP's presidential candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections. His political journey saw him lose first to late President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress and later to current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the same party.

The former Vice President's transition to ADC follows his resignation from the PDP two months ago, which came after a prolonged conflict with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other political allies. This development occurred shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission officially recognized the David Mark-led African Democratic Congress.

Symbolic Ceremony and Future Plans

The symbolic membership ceremony took place in Yola rather than the initially expected location of Jada, attracting substantial crowds of supporters, party chieftains, and community stakeholders. Photographs from the event showed Atiku beaming with smiles while holding his membership form and a customized "Waziri 01" jersey.

Through his social media handle, Atiku confirmed the development with the simple message: "it's official .-AA," finally putting to rest months of speculation about his political future following his departure from PDP.

The ADC has announced ambitious preparations for the 2027 elections, including plans to commence membership registration this week, hold congresses in February, and conduct a non-elective national convention. This political realignment represents one of the most significant developments in Nigerian politics as the country looks toward the next general elections.
