The Christian Youth Movement for Tinubu-Shettima is a socio-political organisation mobilising Christian youths across Nigeria in support of President Bola Tinubu's re-election. In an interview with Premium Times, leader Adeleke Emmanuel discussed the group's aims, membership, and stance on key issues.
Name and Membership
Emmanuel explained that the name reflects the unique circumstances of the 2023 elections, when religious tensions arose over the APC's same-faith ticket. The group aims to show that supporting a candidate based on competence and vision is rational. While focused on Christian youths, the group welcomes all young Nigerians who share their belief in the Renewed Hope agenda.
Objectives and Reach
The primary mission is to connect the government with citizens by mobilising, educating, and empowering youth. The group has networks in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with over 1.2 million verified members. Coordinators at state, local government, and ward levels can activate grassroots mobilisation within 24 hours.
Support for APC Candidates
The group's identity is tied to Tinubu-Shettima's re-election, but it also mobilises for APC gubernatorial, senatorial, and legislative candidates, believing the president's success requires a cooperative legislature and stable state structures.
Role in Osun and Ekiti Elections
The group will play an active role in the coming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti, mobilising grassroots voters, particularly faith-based youth, and educating them on the benefits of continued alignment with the progressive centre under Tinubu.
View on APC Primaries
Emmanuel described internal contests as competitive due to high stakes, but emphasised the importance of reconciliation. The group supports the party's conflict resolution committees and focuses on uniting young people.
Support for Tinubu's Policies
The group supports three key policies: local government financial autonomy, the Nigerian Students' Loan Scheme, and infrastructure investment. These are seen as transformative for youth development and economic growth.
Security and Economic Concerns
Emmanuel acknowledged the challenges but rejected the label of failure. He described the current situation as the pain of necessary structural reforms, including ending fuel subsidies and forex distortions. He argued that supporting the government during these reforms is patriotic.
Insecurity in the South-West
While recognising the grief caused by attacks, Emmanuel stressed that security lapses stem from neglected infrastructure and porous borders. The government is investing in technology, military hardware, and regional security outfits like Amotekun.
Convincing Nigerians for a Second Term
Emmanuel acknowledged the hardship but argued that voting for a second term means voting for future prosperity. He cited the cost of inaction, a shift from consumption to production, and improving revenue indicators as reasons for support.
Cabinet Performance
The group sees the cabinet as technically skilled. Notable performers include Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (Interior) for digital transformation and Charles Odii (SMEDAN) for advancing youth entrepreneurship.
Message to President Tinubu
Emmanuel urged the president to continue the Student Loan Scheme, local government autonomy, and CNG transition, while accelerating relief delivery, stabilising the naira, and replacing underperforming ministers with younger talent.
