Court Nullifies ADC State and Local Government Congresses in Adamawa
A state high court in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, has nullified the state and local government congresses conducted by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state. The court ruled that the exercises were invalid due to breaches of due process.
Comrade Shehu Yohanna, the chairman of the ADC in Adamawa, had challenged the conduct of the congresses before the court, alleging failure to comply with established party and legal procedures.
Justice Isa Ahmed of the trial court held that the congresses violated Section 84(4) of the Electoral Act and Article 18 of the ADC constitution. According to TVC, the judge stated that the defendants did not adhere to laid-down guidelines but relied on what can be described as self-imposed procedures.
The court also noted several other irregularities, including the use of an inappropriate venue and inadequate notice for the elections. The judge nullified the congresses, noting that actions taken during the pendency of an earlier interim order cannot stand.
This ruling has significant implications for the ADC in Adamawa, a state known as the home of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
