In a significant political development that could reshape Nigeria's opposition landscape, Senator Agom Jarigbe has officially abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party for the ruling All Progressives Congress. The Cross River North representative announced his defection during Tuesday's plenary session at the National Assembly, dealing another blow to the already troubled PDP.
Irreconcilable Differences Force Senator's Exit
Senator Jarigbe's resignation letter, read aloud by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, revealed that his decision followed deep and thoughtful reflection on the challenges plaguing his former party. The senator expressed profound regret about the deep-seated and irreconcilable differences within PDP ranks at both state and national levels.
In his formal notification to Senate leadership, Jarigbe stated: "The decision has been taken after a deep and thoughtful reflection on the current state of my former party. It is with profound regret that I cite the prevailing deep-seated and irreconcilable differences, as well as the persistent and deliberate factions within the party" as his primary reason for departure.
Joining APC for Better Representation
Explaining his move to the ruling party, the Cross River North senator emphasized that APC provides a more stable and progressive platform for delivering democratic dividends to his constituents. He expressed confidence that under President Bola Tinubu's leadership and the National Assembly's steady guidance, he could more effectively fulfill his mandate to the people of Cross River North.
Jarigbe highlighted that his defection aligns with the best interests of his constituents and his continued pursuit of effective representation. The senator believes the ruling party's structure will enable him to better serve the needs and expectations of those who elected him to office.
Deepening Crisis Within PDP
Jarigbe's departure adds to the mounting troubles facing the main opposition party, which has been grappling with intense leadership battles and internal factionalism. The PDP is currently divided between supporters of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and those aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
The internal conflict has escalated to the point of mutual suspensions between rival factions, further weakening the party's cohesion. The crisis intensified recently when a Federal High Court in Abuja halted PDP's planned national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
This defection follows a similar pattern established earlier this year when three influential PDP senators from Kebbi state also crossed over to APC in May. The continuing exodus of prominent figures from the opposition party raises serious questions about its stability and preparedness for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Following the reading of his defection letter, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin formally welcomed Senator Jarigbe to his new political home, signaling the ruling party's acceptance of another significant addition to their ranks.
