Nollywood actress and filmmaker Doris Ogala, who recently emerged as the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Abia State, has taken a strong stance against Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu. She accuses him of demolishing shops belonging to traders in the Afara Community of Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Allegations of Forced Acquisition
According to reports, the deputy governor allegedly acquired a property in the area and subsequently demolished existing shops without prior notice. Ogala, now a flagbearer for the AAC, visited the affected traders to assess the situation. She expressed deep disappointment and condemned the act.
Emotional Response
During her visit, Ogala broke down in tears while comforting a widow whose shop was destroyed. She stated, "The power is in your hands. That is why I am coming out to liberate Abia State. My people are suffering. A deputy governor demolished people's shops without notice. I am disappointed." She emphasized that the AAC stands for the oppressed and the commoner.
Ogala further alleged that the reality in Abia State differs from the image portrayed on social media. She warned that speaking out leads to retaliation, referencing the demolition near her own property. She announced a donation of N200,000 for each affected individual to help them secure new shops.
Deputy Governor's Denial
In response, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu denied any involvement in the land acquisition or demolition. His Chief Press Secretary, Cyril Eke-Mba, issued a statement describing the claims as false and misleading. The statement clarified that the matter arose from statutory development control activities by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), a government agency responsible for urban planning and land-use compliance.
Call for Accountability
Ogala insists that the deputy governor must be held accountable and demands an explanation. She reiterated her commitment to liberating the state and prioritizing the welfare of its people.
