Former Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Yobe State. He made the announcement after submitting his nomination form, pledging to build on the achievements of the current administration while prioritizing security and human development.
Motivation for Joining the Race
Baba explained that his decision was driven by a desire to continue and improve upon the work of the present governor, whose tenure ends next year. "I am in the race because I feel I have the passion, the credibility, and everything needed to lead the people of Yobe State as governor," he stated.
Key Priority Areas
The former police chief emphasized that his administration would focus on critical sectors such as education, agriculture, and healthcare. He noted that Yobe remains largely agrarian and requires targeted investments to unlock its full potential. However, he stressed that security would remain the cornerstone of his agenda, describing it as the foundation for economic growth and social stability.
Rejection of Consensus Candidate
Addressing reports of a consensus candidate backed by political stakeholders in the state, Baba dismissed the process, stating he neither participated in nor endorsed any such arrangement. He urged supporters to make informed political decisions by critically examining candidates' programs and party manifestos.
Other Ex-IGP in the Race
In a related development, another former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu Abubakar, has ruled out a consensus to pick the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer for the forthcoming governorship election in Nasarawa State. Abubakar, a key contender for the party's ticket, insisted that nothing short of a direct primary would be accepted. He spoke through his campaign director, Isah Nathaniel, in Lafia.
