Former Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Isah Idris, has resigned his membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Idris, who currently represents Gwaram Constituency, announced his decision in a letter addressed to the APC ward chairman in Gwaram.
Reasons for Resignation
In the letter, the lawmaker stated that his resignation followed careful reflection on the party's direction and its founding ideals. He wrote: "I wish to formally inform you about my decision to resign from the All Progressives Congress. As a former Speaker and founding member, I hoped the APC would uphold its principles. I strongly believe it is time for me to step aside."
Screening Controversy
Idris's resignation comes shortly after the party's screening exercise for aspirants, where he was reportedly screened out and replaced by Ado Yakubu Zandam. This development is believed to have influenced his decision to leave the party.
Speculations on Next Move
Although Idris has not officially declared his next political destination, sources suggest he may consider joining either the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Meanwhile, a statement from PDP Publicity Secretary Umar Kyari Jitau welcomed Idris into the opposition party, further fueling speculation about his possible defection.
Political Implications
Idris's departure marks a significant loss for the APC in Jigawa State, given his influence as a former Speaker. Political analysts will be watching closely to see which party he aligns with next, as this could impact the balance of power in the state assembly.
