Former Ondo Governor Olusegun Mimiko Officially Resigns from PDP Membership
In a significant political development, former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has officially parted ways with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirming his resignation from the party. This move follows persistent speculation about his political status and marks a clear departure from his long-standing affiliation with the PDP.
Resignation Letter Details and Reasons
Mimiko's resignation was formalized in a letter dated April 10, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 7 in the Ondo West Local Government Area. In the correspondence, the former governor explained that his decision was driven by strictly personal reasons, emphasizing the need to clarify his position due to his extended absence from active party engagement.
The letter stated: "I hereby tender my resignation from the People's Democratic Party (PDP), effective April 10, 2026, for strictly personal reasons. As you are very much aware, I have somewhat distanced myself from party activities for some time. This stance afforded me a great deal of time to reflect and consult widely, upon which the decision to quit the PDP was taken."
Mimiko further assured that he remains committed to Nigeria's democratic process and will continue collaborating with like-minded individuals to advance national well-being. He added that his resignation was made without any animosity toward the party or its members, wishing the PDP success in its future endeavors.
Confirmation and Speculations on Future Moves
Eni Akinsola, a former Chief Press Secretary to Mimiko, confirmed the resignation, noting that the ex-governor has indeed submitted his letter. However, Akinsola declined to provide additional details regarding Mimiko's next political steps, leaving room for further speculation.
Amidst this development, there are growing rumors that Mimiko might be considering a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC). These speculations have been fueled by reports of his purported recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, suggesting a potential realignment in his political career.
This resignation underscores the ongoing shifts within Nigeria's political landscape, as key figures reassess their party affiliations. Mimiko's departure from the PDP could influence future electoral dynamics in Ondo State and beyond, highlighting the fluid nature of political loyalties in the country.
