Former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose has made startling revelations about impending political defections that could reshape Nigeria's political landscape. The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain disclosed that several PDP governors are preparing to cross over to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Governors on the Move to APC
During an interview on Tuesday, November 11, Fayose specifically named Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State as the first in line to defect to the APC. According to the former governor, President Bola Tinubu has already handed over Governor Kefas to the APC national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, signaling an imminent political move.
Fayose further revealed that Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State from the North-Central region would follow Kefas in defecting from the opposition party to the ruling party. The outspoken politician mentioned that another governor would join the movement after Mutfwang, though he deliberately withheld this third governor's identity.
Nigerians React to Political Shifts
The revelation has sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians across social media platforms and political circles. Some citizens expressed optimism about the potential benefits of such political realignments.
Ahmad Ololu commented positively on the development, stating: "Interesting developments! If handled wisely, political shifts like this can bring fresh energy and ideas to governance for the benefit of citizens."
However, other reactions reflected skepticism and concern about the implications for Nigeria's democracy. Abu Bakr questioned the APC's strategy: "My question remains, how many governors will be enough for Tinubu and his APC? Will 36 be enough, or do they need to create more states and governors for him before the 2027 election?"
Olumide Olorunfemi expressed concern about the weakening of opposition, noting: "A government without a strong, policy-driven opposition is not just weak. It's boring. The competition of ideas is what forces better governance and keeps a democracy alive. Without it, we get stagnation and arrogance in power."
Allegations and Broader Political Context
Some critics accused the APC-led federal government of using financial incentives to lure opposition governors. Nairobobi claimed: "It's apparently true that the President is using government funds to 'lure' governors and Senate members to defect to the criminal organisation called APC. We need a revolution in Nigeria fast!"
The political revelations come amid ongoing internal crises within the PDP. Legit.ng had previously reported that PDP governors, under the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed as Chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum, have issued fresh warnings to the camp of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and his allies.
Governor Bala Mohammed emphasized that the party is not afraid of anyone, indicating the tense atmosphere within the opposition party ahead of their national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
These developments highlight the continuing political realignments in Nigeria as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections, with potential defections that could significantly alter the balance of power between the major political parties.
