A political support group, Voice of Kano North, has officially declared its endorsement of Deputy President of the Senate Barau I. Jibrin for the senatorial district ticket in the 2027 elections. The group emphasized that the region cannot afford to lose the Deputy President of the Senate, asserting that his continued representation is crucial for sustaining ongoing development in the area.
Group's Declaration and Rationale
During a press conference held on Tuesday, the group threw its weight behind Barau's continuity bid, describing him as the most impactful representative the zone has produced since the return of democracy in 1999. Spokesperson Habib Jibrin Yan Cibi addressed journalists, highlighting Barau's visible development across Kano North, particularly in education, infrastructure, and human capital development, which he said has transformed the socio-economic landscape of the district.
Educational and Institutional Achievements
The group argued that Barau's leadership has led to the expansion of educational opportunities through the establishment of higher institutions and learning centres across all 13 local government areas of the zone. These include Open University study centres and extensions of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma. Additional federal institutions facilitated by the senator include the Federal University of Science and Technology in Kabo, a Police College, an Immigration training institute in Bichi, and a Civil Defence institute in Gwarzo.
Infrastructure and Economic Impact
On infrastructure, the group cited the ongoing Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi road project, valued at over N30 billion, as one of the most significant interventions in the zone, boosting transportation and economic activities. It further claimed that Barau's impact is particularly visible in Gwarzo Local Government Area, where multiple projects have been executed across sectors including healthcare, water supply, rural electrification, and community development.
Agricultural and Social Welfare Programs
The group also highlighted interventions in agriculture and social welfare, including distribution of fertilisers, livestock support, cash and food assistance, as well as empowerment programmes for youths and women. These initiatives, according to the group, have positively affected the lives of many residents in the senatorial district.
Political Context and Criticism
Raising the political tone, the group criticised former Deputy Governor and ex-Minister Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, who is reportedly being considered as a potential contender. The group alleged that his years in public office did not translate into comparable development for the area, thereby reinforcing their support for Barau's continued representation.
