Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has resigned her membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party's leadership in Ogun State of persistent disregard, rejection, and unfair treatment.
In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Obasanjo announced her decision to leave the party. She had recently contested for the party's governorship ticket in the state.
Obasanjo, a former senator, faulted the consensus process that led to Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi)'s emergence as the APC governorship candidate. She argued that the process did not align with the party's established guidelines. While she had committed to respecting any consensus decision, she stated she was neither consulted nor included in the process that produced Adeola.
The former senator further alleged that some of her supporters were denied access to the venue where the candidate was unveiled and were subjected to acts of intimidation. Despite her reservations, she said she embraced the party's decision and publicly congratulated Adeola on the night of his emergence.
Obasanjo revealed that Adeola subsequently reached out to her and requested a meeting with her supporters. During that meeting, three demands were presented to him, and he promised to respond within a week. However, more than two months later, no feedback had been received.
She described the situation as indicative of a wider pattern of the party failing to acknowledge or value her contributions. She added, 'The treatment I have received since then has reflected a consistent pattern of rejection and disrespect. When disrespect is the only fish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving APC table where I am not welcome.'
Obasanjo thanked President Bola Tinubu, Ogun APC Chairman Chief Sanusi, and the Ogun Central Senatorial leadership under Chief Soremi for the support and courtesies they accorded her during her time in the party.
