Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, representing Ogun Central, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) just two months after losing the party's governorship ticket in Ogun State. The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo announced her decision in a letter dated May 31, addressed to Yemi Sanusi, the APC chairman in Ogun.
Reasons for Resignation
In her resignation letter, Iyabo cited persistent disrespect from the party's leadership and alleged breaches of agreements by Solomon Adeola, the party's consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election. She expressed disappointment over the treatment she and her supporters received during the primary process.
Background of Political Aspirations
Iyabo joined the APC in February 2026 and quickly indicated interest in contesting the governorship race. However, she later suspended her aspiration following the party's consensus arrangement. She raised concerns about how the process was handled, alleging that some of her supporters were maltreated and denied entry to the meeting venue where the consensus candidate was chosen.
The resignation marks a significant political shift, as Iyabo Obasanjo had been a prominent figure within the APC in Ogun State. Her departure raises questions about internal party dynamics and the handling of candidate selection processes.
