Kwankwaso Abandons NNPP, Switches Allegiance to ADC in Major Political Shift
In a significant political development, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, has officially severed ties with his former party and is poised to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This move marks a strategic realignment aimed at consolidating his political influence and reshaping Nigeria's opposition landscape.
Official Announcement and Directives to Loyalists
According to a statement released on Saturday night and signed by Dr. Habibu Mohammad, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Kwankwaso has finalized all necessary arrangements to defect to the ADC. The statement confirmed that he will officially register with the party on Monday, March 30, 2026, at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, located on Miller Road in Kano, starting at 12 p.m.
Dr. Mohammad elaborated, stating, "The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform all its members across Nigeria and the general public that our Supreme Leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has concluded all necessary arrangements to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC)."
In a direct command to his supporters, Kwankwaso has instructed all members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement to immediately proceed and register with the ADC in their respective wards, local government areas, and states. The spokesperson emphasized that members should actively participate in all party activities, contributing to the growth, development, and success of the ADC at every level.
Motivations Behind the Defection
The decision to join the ADC is described as being driven by the best interests of the movement, the state, and the nation. It reflects a deep commitment to democratic values, good governance, and the collective aspirations of the Nigerian people. Dr. Mohammad underscored this point, noting, "We emphasize that democracy must be protected, and the will of the people must always be respected. The Kwankwasiyya Movement remains resolute, united, and committed to building a better and more inclusive Nigeria."
This political shift comes exactly one week after a high-profile strategic meeting at Kwankwaso's residence in Kano. The meeting included former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Senator Seriake Dickson, signaling a broader coalition-building effort among opposition figures.
Implications for Nigerian Politics
Kwankwaso's defection to the ADC is a clear indication of his readiness to redefine his presidential ambitions and strengthen his bid to reclaim political strongholds from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). By aligning with the emerging opposition party, he aims to bolster his influence and potentially reshape the dynamics of future elections.
This move not only impacts the NNPP, which loses a key figure, but also positions the ADC as a more formidable force in Nigeria's political arena. It highlights ongoing realignments within the opposition, as leaders seek to consolidate power and challenge the status quo.
As Kwankwaso and his loyalists transition to the ADC, the political landscape in Nigeria is set for further evolution, with implications for governance, party politics, and democratic processes across the country.
