Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso Announces Resignation from New Nigeria People's Party

Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) with immediate effect. In a press statement released on Sunday, Kwankwaso expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the party's national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

He acknowledged that the decision was not an easy one, given his commitment as a bonafide member of the NNPP. However, Kwankwaso explained that the current political landscape in Nigeria necessitates strategic realignment to effectively drive national change.

Strategic Realignment and Gratitude to Party Leadership

"Considering the current trajectory of the nation's political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation," Kwankwaso stated in his resignation announcement.

He extended his deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout his tenure. Kwankwaso also thanked the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the NNPP, from the ward to the state level.

Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to the shared mission. "We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation," he added.

Defection to African Democratic Congress and Loyalist Movement

Reports indicate that, barring any last-minute changes, Kwankwaso is set to defect to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) to consolidate his political strength. In line with this move, he has directed his Kwankwasiyya loyalists to decamp with him to the new political platform.

A statement released on Saturday night and signed by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Mohammad, confirmed that Kwankwaso will officially join the ADC on Monday. The statement read, "The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform all its members across Nigeria and the general public that our Supreme Leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has concluded all necessary arrangements to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC)."

"In furtherance of this decision, he will officially register with the party on Monday, March 30, 2026, at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Kano, by 12 p.m.," the statement detailed. This move marks a significant shift in Nigeria's political dynamics, as Kwankwaso seeks to realign his strategies for greater impact.
