Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reportedly threatened to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a dispute over candidate selection in Kano State. The disagreement centers on the implementation of a 60/40 power-sharing arrangement between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the NDC structure.
Party Defends Candidate Replacement
A document signed by NDC Kano State Chairman Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga confirmed that several previously submitted candidates were replaced to reflect the agreed formula. The memo, also sent to NDC national leaders, stated that the decision aims to maintain internal balance and party unity. However, the Kwankwaso camp has expressed dissatisfaction, alleging a breach of trust in the implementation process.
Affected Constituencies
The revised list impacts key federal constituency and state assembly tickets across Kano, including Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Dala, Tarauni, and Dawakin Kudu. This has heightened tensions within the opposition alliance.
In a related development, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi recently named Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 election, signaling a major opposition coalition. A party insider noted, “The issue is not just about numbers, but about trust and respect for agreements reached by all stakeholders.”
The unfolding situation raises questions about the stability of the emerging opposition coalition as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
