In a major move to address internal leadership challenges, the Labour Party (LP) has officially disbanded its Interim National Working Committee (iNWC). The decision, announced on 4 December 2025, comes after the committee's prolonged failure to organize crucial primary elections and halt the defection of party members.
Board of Trustees Takes Decisive Action
The announcement was made by the party's Board of Trustees (BoT) in a formal letter. The dissolution directly affects the committee led by Esther Nenadi Usman, the interim National Chairman, and Darlington Nwaokocha, the interim National Secretary. The letter was signed by the BoT Chairman, S.O.Z. Ejiofor, and the Secretary, Comrade Mohammed.
The BoT cited the iNWC's inability to fulfill its core mandates as the primary reason for the drastic step. Key failures highlighted include:
- Not organizing nationwide congresses.
- Failing to conduct primary elections for party positions.
- Inability to stem the tide of members leaving the party.
Path Forward: NEC to Convene and Handover Ordered
According to the BoT's directive, the statutory National Executive Council (NEC) will soon meet. This meeting's purpose is to appoint new, substantive members to the National Working Committee. This process will adhere strictly to the party's constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.
The dissolved interim committee has been instructed to immediately cease all party activities. Furthermore, they must hand over all official documents and properties to the Secretary of the Board of Trustees. This clean break is intended to pave the way for a fresh start.
Aiming for Stability and 2027 Preparedness
The BoT emphasized that this tough decision was necessary to safeguard the party's future. The ultimate goal is to restore confidence among members and the Nigerian public. By establishing a properly constituted leadership, the Labour Party aims to reposition itself as a credible platform for workers and citizens seeking democratic governance.
This restructuring is fundamentally linked to preparing the party for effective and competitive participation in the 2027 general elections. The move signals an attempt to move past internal wrangling and focus on national political engagement.
