Labour Party lawmaker Philip Agbese has strongly criticised growing calls for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation over Nigeria’s security challenges, describing them as politically motivated and detrimental to national peace efforts.
Agbese Denounces Resignation Calls as Political Maneuvering
Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in Benue State and serves as Deputy House Spokesperson, argued that insecurity is a national issue requiring cooperation from all stakeholders, not partisan attacks. In a statement obtained by Legit.ng, he said political rhetoric undermines the work of security agencies.
“The issue of insecurity is a national challenge that requires the collective support of all Nigerians. What we need at this critical time is partnership with our armed forces and security agencies, not rhetoric designed to score political points,” Agbese stated.
Reaction to Minority Leader’s Remarks
The lawmaker was responding to comments by House Minority Leader Fred Agbedi, who reportedly urged President Tinubu to resolve the country’s security and economic crises or resign. Agbese called the timing inappropriate, especially as security forces intensify operations against terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers.
He alleged that the demand for resignation is linked to political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections. “I am afraid, the Leader of the Minority who is yet to settle down to work has jumped into a narrow conclusion that point to MPs being adversely maneuvered from outside the parliament by forces interested in President Tinubu’s job for 2027. Some of us in the opposition will not accept that,” he said.
Call for Patriotism Over Politics
Agbese asserted that the push for Tinubu’s exit is not rooted in patriotism but a conspiracy by desperate political actors. “The call for the resignation of President Tinubu is not borne out of patriotism. It appears to be part of a broader conspiracy by some political actors who are desperate to remove the President from office through every available means,” he noted.
He maintained that lawmakers should focus on supporting security institutions and proposing workable solutions. Agbese disclosed that the House of Representatives recently invited security chiefs for discussions on the security situation. He praised the armed forces and intelligence agencies for their sacrifices and urged Nigerians to support ongoing security operations.
Background on Nigeria’s Security Challenges
Agbese emphasised that security problems predate the current administration and require sustained commitment, intelligence gathering, adequate funding, and inter-agency cooperation. He expressed confidence in the Tinubu administration’s dedication to strengthening security operations and institutional capacity.
In a related incident, terrorists attacked Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State during Easter celebrations, killing at least seven people and abducting several others, heightening fears among residents.
