The All Progressives Congress (APC) has received a significant boost in Kano State as Yusuf Dambatta, the former deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, officially defected to the ruling party. Dambatta announced his decision on Sunday, June 7, 2026, after extensive consultations with his political associates, supporters, and stakeholders.
Reasons for Defection
Dambatta stated that his move to the APC was driven by the party's commitment to the welfare of the people and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of Kano State and Nigeria. He expressed confidence that the APC provides a more suitable platform for him to advance his political goals and support the Kano First Agenda.
In his statement, Dambatta said: "I hereby formally announce my decision to join the All Progressives Congress. This decision was taken after careful consideration and wide consultations with my leaders, political associates, supporters, and stakeholders." He reaffirmed his dedication to policies and programs that promote peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
Gratitude to PDP
While leaving the PDP, Dambatta extended his appreciation to the party's members and leaders for the relationships and experiences they shared over the years. He said: "I look forward to working with members of the APC and all well-meaning citizens in support of the Kano First Agenda and the continued development of our dear state."
Context of Political Realignments
This defection comes amid a series of political realignments in Kano State. Recently, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau also resigned from the PDP, citing strategic political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. Additionally, Felix Igboke, a former commissioner in Ebonyi State, defected from the APC to the PDP, bringing over 10,000 supporters with him. These moves reflect shifting political alliances as parties prepare for future electoral contests.
The APC leadership in Kano has welcomed Dambatta, viewing his defection as a major boost for the party's strength and grassroots support. Political analysts believe that such high-profile defections could influence voter behavior and party dynamics in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
Dambatta's decision underscores the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where politicians often switch parties based on strategic calculations. His addition to the APC is expected to enhance the party's appeal in Kano, a key state in national elections.
