Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged that he will not persecute opposition members if he becomes Nigeria's president in 2027. In an interview with DW, the former Anambra State governor outlined his vision for a governance system that prioritizes proper functioning and inclusivity.
Commitment to a Viable Opposition
Obi stated that his administration would ensure a strong and viable opposition in Nigeria. He emphasized that he would not use state machinery to target political rivals. "The system must work the way it should function, I would never prosecute anybody politically, I would never do anything wrong while in office," Obi said. "I would not go after opponent, I would make sure that we have strong opposition parties that can stand and say no. In times of problems I would invite them."
Collaborative Approach to National Challenges
Addressing the security and economic difficulties facing the northern region, Obi stressed the need for cross-party collaboration. He noted that lasting solutions require input from all stakeholders. "If I was president with what is happening in the North, I would invite all opposition parties and I would sit with stakeholders in the North to discuss and come up with a solutions," he added. Obi's remarks come amid growing concerns over insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria, with many calling for a more unified political approach.
