In a dramatic move to enforce internal discipline, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially expelled eleven of its prominent members, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose. The party's National Working Committee (NWC) announced this decisive action on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, following a meeting in Abuja, describing it as a necessary step to sanitise the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Expulsion List and Official Announcement
Kabiru Turaki, the PDP national chairman, confirmed the development to journalists at a press briefing. He stated that the expulsions reflected the party's resolution to curb acts of internal sabotage and uphold discipline. The formal expulsion certificates have been dispatched to all affected individuals.
The motion for expulsion was originally moved by Olabode George, a former national vice chairman of the PDP, during the party's convention in Ibadan. The motion received support from Samaila Burga, the PDP chairman in Bauchi state.
The full list of expelled members includes:
- Nyesom Wike (Minister of the FCT)
- Ayodele Fayose (Former Governor of Ekiti State)
- Adeyemi Ajibade (SAN) - National Legal Adviser
- AbdulRahman Mohammed
- George Turner
- Dan Orbih
- Umar Bature
- Austin Nwachukwu
- Mao Chuambuwa
- Abraham Ammah
Governors Mutfwang and Fintiri Distance Themselves
However, the expulsion has immediately sparked internal resistance, notably from two sitting PDP governors. Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State and Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State have publicly rejected the party's decision.
Governor Mutfwang, in a statement released by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, firmly distanced himself from the motion. He clarified that the matter was never discussed at the PDP Governors' Forum nor tabled before the party's National Executive Committee (NEC). Mutfwang warned that such an action could be counter-productive, further polarising the party at a time when efforts should be focused on stabilisation and unity.
Echoing this sentiment, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State stated he strongly believes the expulsion is not in the PDP's best interest. He reiterated his commitment to the party but emphasised that he would not support any move that deepens existing divisions. "I believe that peace and reconciliation are the only ways forward for our great party," Fintiri asserted.
Implications for Party Unity and 2027 Ambitions
This expulsion of high-profile figures represents one of the most significant purges in the PDP's recent history. While the NWC frames it as a cleansing exercise for the 2027 electoral battle, the open rejection by sitting governors reveals a stark rift within the party's leadership.
The development sets the stage for a potential power struggle and raises serious questions about the party's cohesion. The coming days will be crucial as the PDP navigates the fallout from this decision, balancing the enforcement of discipline with the imperative to maintain a broad, united front capable of challenging the ruling party in the next national elections.
