PDP Accuses Turaki Faction of Distorting Supreme Court Ruling on Convention
PDP Rejects Turaki's Interpretation of Supreme Court Judgment

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the interpretation of the April 30, 2026, Supreme Court judgment by a former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, labeling it a deliberate distortion of facts.

Party Clarifies Judgment Scope

During a press conference at the party's national secretariat in Abuja, the PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, clarified that the Supreme Court ruling only nullified the controversial Ibadan Convention and dismissed the appeal by the Turaki-led faction for lacking merit. The party insisted that no pronouncement was made regarding the suspension or expulsion of any party official.

The PDP emphasized that the issue of suspension or expulsion was never before the courts and therefore could not have been part of the Supreme Court's determination. They stated, 'The judgment is clear and unambiguous. It addressed only the validity or otherwise of the so-called 15th and 16th Ibadan Convention. At no point did the court make any pronouncement on suspension or expulsion of any officer of the party.'

Leadership Structure Intact

The opposition party further asserted that there is no leadership vacuum within its ranks, stressing that its structures remain fully operational under National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu. It described attempts by the Turaki group to twist the judgment as 'desperate and misleading' and urged Nigerians to rely on the Certified True Copy of the ruling.

The PDP also criticized former Senate President Adolphus Wabara for claiming a purported takeover by the Board of Trustees (BoT). According to the party, the constitution does not empower the BoT to assume functions of the National Working Committee or take over leadership. It argued that Wabara's tenure as BoT chairman had expired and that the only recognized BoT leadership is under Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

'Senator Adolphus Wabara should desist from parading himself as speaking on behalf of the PDP. Such actions amount to infractions that will no longer be tolerated,' the party warned.

Accusations of Destabilization

The PDP accused those behind the Ibadan convention of acting in defiance of valid court orders, noting that their continued actions even after the Supreme Court judgment underscore a clear agenda to destabilize the party. The party reiterated that there are no factions within its fold and urged media organizations to stop portraying it as divided.

It called on party members and the public to disregard propaganda from 'rejected elements,' insisting that the PDP remains united, lawful, and focused on its role as Nigeria's leading opposition party.
