PRP Demands Tinubu's Impeachment Over Alleged Tax Law Tampering
PRP Calls for Tinubu Impeachment Over Tax Law Breach

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has issued a strong demand to the National Assembly, urging lawmakers to commence impeachment proceedings against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This call is contingent on him being found culpable in the alleged illegal alteration of Nigeria's tax legislation after it was passed by parliament.

A Grave Constitutional Breach Alleged

The opposition party's stance follows serious claims made by a member of the House of Representatives. The lawmaker pointed out significant discrepancies between the versions of tax bills approved by the National Assembly and the texts that were later officially gazetted. The PRP asserts that any modification of a bill outside the formal legislative process constitutes a severe act of executive misconduct.

In a statement released on Monday, December 22, 2025, the National Chairman of the PRP, Falalu Bello, described the alleged action as a direct assault on parliamentary sovereignty. He emphasized that it undermines the core principle of the separation of powers as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Call for Accountability and Immediate Action

The party is calling for a comprehensive and transparent investigation to unravel how the alterations occurred. "We insist that those found culpable, regardless of their position, must be held accountable and face appropriate punishment for their fraudulent conduct," Bello stated. He made it clear that if evidence emerges directly implicating President Tinubu in the manipulations, the National Assembly must move for his impeachment without delay.

"No individual, including the President, should be above the law," the PRP chairman declared. The party framed the alleged act as an audacious display of executive dishonesty, involving the insertion, deletion, and modification of key provisions after the law was passed. They condemned it as a mockery of the Nigerian people and a reckless disdain for the rule of law.

Suspension and Potential Legal Action

Beyond the impeachment threat, the PRP has laid out immediate demands. They are calling for the immediate suspension of the implementation of the disputed tax laws. This suspension should remain in place until a full investigation is completed and all conflicts between the passed laws and the gazetted versions are resolved.

The party warned that if the matter is not addressed promptly and decisively, they will seek judicial intervention. "We are prepared to approach the courts to stop the enforcement of these laws and seek appropriate redress for the violations committed," Bello added. The PRP cautioned that the administration's alleged disregard for constitutional order risks deepening Nigeria's governance crisis and damaging its international credibility.
