In a significant political shift that has reshaped the landscape of Rivers State, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, along with fifteen other members, have officially abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The lawmakers have now pitched their tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A Dramatic Announcement During Plenary
The defection was publicly declared by Speaker Martin Amaewhule during a plenary session held on Friday, December 5, 2025. Addressing his colleagues, Amaewhule pointed to deep-seated divisions within the PDP as the core reason for their collective exit. He stated that he had already taken formal steps to notify his ward chairman of his decision to leave the party.
"Distinguished colleagues, very happily, let me announce that your speaker has decided and has indeed written to my ward chairman of my decision to leave the PDP. APC is my new party," Amaewhule proclaimed. He further assured that he would complete all necessary processes to obtain his APC membership card promptly, solidifying the move.
Aligning with the Centre and Praising Tinubu
The Speaker was effusive in his praise for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, framing the defection as a strategic alignment with the federal government. He highlighted the President's efforts in tackling national security and his demonstrated goodwill towards Rivers State.
"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing so much for this country. He means well for Nigeria. He is tackling the issue of security headlong. The president has shown love to Rivers State," Amaewhule said. He emphasized that the move was to "join forces with Mr. President" and ensure Rivers people are integral participants in national governance.
This development follows closely on the heels of a vote of confidence passed in President Tinubu by the 32-member Assembly just days earlier, on Wednesday. The lawmakers had urged the President to seek re-election, signaling a growing rapport with the APC-led federal government.
Context of Political Instability in Rivers
The defection occurs against the backdrop of prolonged political turbulence in Rivers State. Earlier in the year, on March 18, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state due to the escalating political crisis. This drastic measure led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other key officials for a period of six months.
The state of emergency was eventually lifted on September 17, 2025, but the political landscape has remained volatile. The latest mass defection, involving key figures like Dumle Maol, Major Jack, and Linda Stewart, represents a substantial recalibration of power and allegiance in the state's legislature, potentially weakening the PDP's grip and strengthening the APC's influence in the oil-rich region.
