Shuaibu Rabiu Sworn In as House of Reps Member for Kano

Shuaibu Rabiu has been formally sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State. The oath of office was administered by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on Wednesday, officially admitting Rabiu into the 10th House. His swearing-in follows a by-election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the vacant seat after the death of former representative Muhammad Danjuma-Hassan of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

By-Election Results and Constitutional Basis

INEC conducted the by-election on 20 June, in compliance with Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates a by-election to fill a National Assembly vacancy occurring more than three months before the expiration of the House’s tenure. This constitutional provision ensures that affected constituencies maintain representation without prolonged gaps. The election saw Rabiu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerge victorious with 35,356 votes, as declared by the Returning Officer, Umar Sani.

Other Candidates' Performance

According to official results, Lawal Garba-Haruna of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) finished second with 268 votes, while Abubakar Yahaya-Muhammad of the Labour Party (LP) secured 98 votes. Sani stated that the outcome was based on collated results from polling units across the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency.

Full Legislative Participation

With his inauguration, Rabiu will now participate fully in legislative proceedings, including debates, committee assignments, and consideration of bills and motions before the House. His swearing-in restores full representation for the constituents of Dawakin Kudu and Warawa, who had been without a representative since the death of Danjuma-Hassan.
