Tinubu Inaugurates High-Powered Committee to Save APC from Implosion Before 2027
Tinubu Forms Committee to Stop APC Crisis Ahead of 2027

In a decisive move to fortify the ruling party, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has established a high-level committee tasked with resolving internal disputes and fostering unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC). This strategic action aims to prevent a potential implosion as the party gears up for the crucial 2027 general elections.

Tinubu's Proactive Move for Party Cohesion

On Wednesday, December 24, in Lagos, President Tinubu inaugurated the Committee on Strategy, Conflict Resolution and Mobilisation. The committee's primary mandate is to tackle lingering disagreements, mediate disputes, and build a cohesive front to ensure the APC remains strong and united. This initiative follows the President's earlier emphasis on unity during the APC's 15th National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on December 19.

At that meeting, Tinubu reminded party leaders that the APC was built on the principles of progressive politics and inclusive participation. He stressed the importance of tolerance and accommodation for the party's resilience, stating that democracy must not fail in their hands.

Composition of the High-Powered Committee

The committee is composed of influential figures from across the party's spectrum to ensure broad representation and authority. Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State serves as the Chairman, with Muiz Banire, the former APC National Legal Adviser, appointed as the Member/Secretary.

Other prominent members include:

  • Senator Adamu Aliero, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum
  • Governors Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta).
  • Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna) and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers).
  • Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
  • Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
  • Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Buni's Pledge for Unity and Strategic Engagement

Upon his inauguration, Chairman Governor Mai Mala Buni expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the committee and pledged to execute its duties with utmost responsibility. He outlined a plan for extensive strategic engagements and consultations to develop a durable and effective strategy.

"We shall implement a system that gives everyone, especially aggrieved parties, a sense of belonging and inclusion, with a renewed hope," Buni assured. He emphasized that the committee would adopt proactive measures in its conflict resolution approach and warned members against letting personal interests override the collective goal of party unity and success.

Buni reiterated that the APC's performance in the 2027 election cycle hinges on collective responsibility and the commitment of all members to discipline and solidarity.

Securing APC's Future Ahead of 2027

The inauguration of this committee signals President Tinubu's proactive and hands-on approach to party management. By addressing grievances and factionalism head-on, the APC leadership aims to consolidate its position and enter the next electoral battle as a unified force. Political analysts view this move as critical for minimizing internal friction and presenting a strong front to the electorate.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the details of the committee's formation and the President's directive. This development occurs against a backdrop of political realignments, including the recent defection of two senators from Rivers State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

The success of this conflict resolution initiative will be closely watched as a bellwether for the ruling party's stability and readiness for the challenges of the 2027 polls.
