The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has confirmed that its presidential candidate for the 2027 election will emerge through a consensus process, citing a lack of time for a primary election. This decision follows the recent defection of prominent politicians Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who left the ADC to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday, May 4.
ADC Spokesperson Confirms Consensus Plan
Bolaji Abdullahi, the spokesperson of the ADC, disclosed the party's plan during an interview on Arise TV. He stated that the consensus approach is necessary because the party cannot afford the lengthy process of a primary election given the limited time before the 2027 polls.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians, with many taking to social media to express their views. Some critics allege that the consensus plan was designed to favor former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, while others praised Peter Obi for leaving the party before such a decision could be imposed.
Public Reactions to the Consensus Decision
Osikhena commented: "I hope those criticizing Obi can now see the truth. The party wanted to cage Obi and make Atiku the consensus candidate, but Obi outsmarted them by leaving." Dr Bak added: "It has always been about Atiku. This consensus arrangement will lead to the opposition losing the 2027 election."
Engr Chibuikem urged former Minister Rotimi Amaechi to also leave the ADC, saying: "Amaechi should find another party because with Atiku in ADC, he will never become president." Nnamdi Opara praised Obi: "Obi has outsmarted the treacherous party leaders."
Rashid criticized the ADC: "The party was set up to work for Nigerians, but ego of bigwigs truncated the process." Sir Cypher alleged: "This consensus was the reason Obi left. Give the ticket to Atiku and make Amaechi his VP."
Background: INEC Reverses Decision on ADC Leadership
In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reversed its decision to derecognize the leadership of former Senate President David Mark in the ADC. This came after the Supreme Court set aside a Court of Appeal ruling on the party's leadership crisis. Mark's name was reinstated on INEC's website following the apex court's judgment.
The ADC's consensus plan and the recent defections mark a significant shift in the opposition's strategy ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
