Alapinni Urges Makinde to Focus on Oyo Security Over Presidential Bid
Alapinni: Makinde Should Prioritize Oyo Security Over Presidency

International human rights lawyer Kola Alapinni has questioned Governor Seyi Makinde's presidential ambition, urging him to prioritize security and governance in Oyo State. Speaking on the governor's reported interest in the 2027 presidential race, Alapinni argued that Makinde should concentrate on addressing security challenges and ensuring peace and stability in Oyo State rather than pursuing a presidential bid.

Alapinni's Critique of Makinde's Ambition

“I don’t see any reason why Governor Seyi Makinde should be bothering himself to say he wants to run for presidency. He’s got bigger fish to fry in his backyard, and that is what he should concentrate on,” Alapinni stated. He emphasized the need for Makinde to provide security and create an enabling environment of peace in Oyo State instead of embarking on what he described as a personal frolic.

Electoral Prospects in Neighboring States

Alapinni further asserted that Makinde would not win in neighboring states like Ogun and Ondo. “Ogun State used to be part of Oyo State, and Oyo State firmly belongs to our camp now already. The governor there is going to make sure that our camp stands its ground. So I don’t understand what—he’s not going to win in Ogun State, he’s not going to win in Ondo State, so if you can’t win the neighboring Yoruba-speaking states, what business do you have to say that you want to lead Nigeria?” he said, adding that Makinde lacks the clout and numbers for a national campaign.

Concerns Over Security in the South-West

Alapinni also expressed concern over security developments in the South-West, questioning the effectiveness of the Amotekun Corps and warning against the proliferation of non-state security groups. “I don’t know what has become of the Amotekun Corps, which was established a few years ago, spearheaded by the late governor of Ondo State. Now we have another group coming up saying it’s forming a Yoruba army. I mean, non-state actors all over, just coming up…” he remarked.

Call for Focus on Governance

He maintained that Governor Makinde’s immediate priority should be strengthening security and ensuring a peaceful environment for residents of Oyo State rather than pursuing a presidential ambition. The lawyer urged the governor to concentrate on his duties and leave national politics aside for now.
