APC Ex-Gubernatorial Candidate Resigns Federal Appointment, May Join Opposition ADC

Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general elections for Kano State, has officially resigned from his position as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN). This move, effective immediately, aligns with a presidential directive aimed at ensuring adherence to electoral laws ahead of upcoming political activities.

Background and Political Career

Gawuna, who previously served as Commissioner of Agriculture under Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and later as deputy governor, lost the 2023 election to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). In his resignation letter dated March 27, 2026, he expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege to contribute to the growth and development of the FMBN and Nigeria at large.

He assured of his commitment to a smooth transition process, pledging to hand over all responsibilities in accordance with established procedures and directives. Prior to this appointment, Gawuna held the role of Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, further solidifying his involvement in public service.

Potential Move to Opposition Party

Credible sources have revealed that Gawuna may be considering a switch from the ruling APC to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) to advance his political ambitions in Kano. It is reported that he has perfected plans to align with the Kwankwasiyya movement, a political faction led by Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to sustain his political relevance.

In a related development, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the NNPP in 2023, has resigned from that party and registered with the ADC. He urged Nigerians to regard the forthcoming general elections as among the most serious in their political lives, emphasizing the duty to free the country from misgovernance.

ADC's Welcome and Political Implications

ADC's National Chairman, David Mark, stated that Kwankwaso's registration marks a defining moment in Nigeria's democracy and a step toward making the nation better and more united. He welcomed Kwankwaso and his millions of supporters to the ADC, highlighting their unity of purpose, conviction, and vision.

This series of resignations and potential party switches underscores the dynamic and evolving nature of Nigerian politics, particularly in Kano State, as key figures reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
