APGA Supporters React as Obi Cubana Heads Pro-Tinubu's City Boy Movement

Published on February 23, 2026, supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have voiced strong reactions following the appointment of businessman Obinna "Obi" Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, as the Southeast coordinator for the pro-Tinubu City Boy Movement. This development has sparked intense debate within APGA circles, particularly regarding its potential impact on the political aspirations of his elder brother, Ikenna Iyiegbu (Ike Cubana), who is contesting a House of Representatives seat under the APGA platform in Idemili North and South, Anambra State.

High-Profile Donation and Political Backlash

Obi Cubana, alongside other prominent Anambra businessmen including Cletus Uzoezie Oragwa of Zenco Oil and Chief Christian Okonkwo of C-Energy Oil, donated a fleet of luxury campaign buses worth hundreds of millions of naira to support President Bola Tinubu's anticipated 2027 re-election campaign. The donation was formally handed over to CityBoyMedia, a media and mobilisation platform affiliated with the City Boy Movement, a youth-driven socio-political and entertainment network with significant grassroots influence in the Southeast region.

The buses, described as high-capacity, air-conditioned luxury models, are intended to enhance logistics, voter mobilisation, awareness campaigns, and grassroots outreach efforts across Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi states. However, critics have raised concerns about the timing and motives behind such substantial donations, suggesting they could lead to perceptions of influence-peddling or cronyism.

APGA Stakeholders Express Confusion and Betrayal

In response, some APGA supporters have labeled Obi Cubana's involvement as a direct betrayal of his brother's political ambitions. Mr. Steve Uzoegwu, a stakeholder from Akwu Ukwu in Idemili South Local Government Area, voiced his concerns in an exclusive interview, questioning how Obi Cubana could inject significant resources into the APC's cause while his elder brother campaigns under APGA. He highlighted the confusion this creates among local constituents, who may be torn between supporting the brothers' conflicting political affiliations.

Uzoegwu pointed to the 2023 general election, where Ikenna lost the House of Representatives race to a Labour Party candidate, arguing that Obi Cubana should instead be rallying support within APGA to secure victory for his brother in the upcoming election. He described the situation as sponsoring confusion within the community, potentially undermining Ikenna's campaign efforts.

Divergent Views Within APGA Ranks

Contrasting this perspective, Hon. Kelvin Okeke, an APGA chieftain from Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area, offered a different interpretation. He asserted that Obi Cubana has committed no offense by coordinating for President Tinubu under the City Boy Movement, emphasizing his right to campaign for the ruling APC even as his brother runs under APGA.

Okeke referenced a statement by Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, noting that APGA is not fielding a presidential candidate in 2027 and is instead adopting President Tinubu as its candidate. He argued that this alignment means APGA and APC are progressives working together, and thus, Obi Cubana's support for Tinubu should not be viewed as a betrayal. Okeke further contended that Ikenna's electoral success is not dependent on his brother's political activities, citing the previous election loss despite Obi Cubana's non-involvement with Tinubu at that time.

Clarification on Resignation Rumors

In related news, the City Boy Movement has dismissed online reports claiming that Obi Cubana resigned from his role as Southeast coordinator. The group clarified that these rumors are false and aimed at creating unnecessary confusion, confirming that Cubana remains actively engaged in political consultations across the Southeast region.

This unfolding scenario highlights the complex dynamics within Nigerian politics, where familial ties and party loyalties often intersect, leading to heated debates and strategic calculations ahead of crucial elections.
