Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has issued a stark warning to President Bola Tinubu, asserting that Nigeria's stability, unity, and democratic future are under significant strain. In an open letter addressed to the President on Friday, George urged an immediate review of governance direction to safeguard democratic institutions and prevent national fragmentation.
Concerns Over Democratic Erosion and Political Suppression
George expressed deep concern that the country is drifting dangerously, citing what he described as the increasing suppression of opposition voices, unchecked political dominance, and the erosion of democratic balance. He emphasized that democracy cannot thrive where opposition parties are weakened, ridiculed, or systematically neutralized. "A country governed without credible dissent is not stable; it is volatile," he stated, cautioning that political control should not be mistaken for strength.
Economic Hardship and Public Anxiety
The elder statesman highlighted that economic hardship, rising costs of living, and widespread uncertainty have heightened public anxiety. Expressing concern over Nigeria's declining relevance, George referenced that the nation, once regarded as the Giant of Africa, now risks falling behind as other countries advance in governance, electoral credibility, and institutional discipline. He also addressed pending judicial matters, particularly at the Supreme Court, urging that actions of political leaders must reinforce confidence in state institutions rather than weaken them.

George stressed that the integrity of the electoral process must remain sacred, warning against any form of manipulation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
