A recently published biography has provided a detailed explanation for former President Muhammadu Buhari's notable lack of support for his vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, during the 2023 presidential race. The revelation centres on the political influence of Bola Tinubu and internal party dynamics.
Buhari's Loyalty to Tinubu Over Osinbajo
The book, titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari by Dr. Charles Omole, was publicly launched on Monday, December 15, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. It delves into a critical period before the last general election, highlighting Buhari's perspective on his deputy's ambition.
According to the author, Buhari was troubled by Osinbajo's decision to run for president, primarily because it placed him in direct competition with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Buhari reportedly viewed Tinubu as the political benefactor who introduced Osinbajo to the national stage. The biography quotes Buhari as stating pointedly, "I don't know Osinbajo from anywhere, I met him only through Tinubu."
This sentiment was compounded by Buhari's reported dissatisfaction with how Osinbajo handled his presidential declaration. Sources in the book indicate that the former president was unimpressed that Osinbajo merely "informed" him of his ambition rather than "consulting" him or seeking his advice beforehand.
Internal APC Struggles and the Role of Due Process
The biography paints a picture of intense factional wrangling within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of its presidential primary. Omole writes that a powerful "cabal" within the party and presidency had formed an anti-Tinubu consensus and sought to impose a different candidate.
Ironically, the book argues that Buhari's strict insistence on following due process and party rules inadvertently aided Tinubu's candidacy. By refusing to endorse any backroom manoeuvres to impose a preferred aspirant once he became aware of them, Buhari's actions disrupted the plans of those opposed to Tinubu, allowing a more open contest.
Aisha Buhari's Influence and Support for Tinubu
Further insights from the biography shed light on the role played by former First Lady, Aisha Buhari. Her open and enthusiastic support for Tinubu's presidential bid is described as having unsettled powerful figures within the presidency. Despite this, she remained undeterred.
The book notes that Tinubu later visited Aisha Buhari to seek her assistance in mobilising women voters. This collaboration contributed to the formation of the APC Women's Campaign Council, which worked alongside the now-First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu.
These disclosures collectively frame the political calculations and personal loyalties that defined the APC's transition period and the outcome of its 2023 presidential primary, ultimately leading to Bola Tinubu's nomination and election.
