David Mark: APC Failures Drive Nigerians' Demand for Political Change in 2027
Senator David Mark, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has asserted that widespread maladministration and economic mismanagement by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are fueling a growing desire among Nigerians for a credible political alternative as the 2027 general elections approach. Mark made these remarks while receiving the report of the ADC's Constitution Review Committee, emphasizing that a party's constitution is far more than a mere document—it embodies the collective aspirations of its members and serves as the foundation for providing people-centered leadership.
Constitutional Review as a Milestone for ADC
Mark stated, "This marks an important milestone for the ADC. I receive, on behalf of the leadership and membership, the report of the Constitution Review Committee with deep appreciation and a sense of responsibility." He praised the committee for its diligence, patriotism, and inclusive approach, noting that constitutional review is never a routine task but requires wisdom, inclusiveness, and foresight. "Our party's constitution is the soul of our collective aspirations. It defines who we are, what we stand for, and how we organize ourselves to serve Nigerians," he added.
Represented by the party's National Legal Adviser, Professor Osarehmni Osunbor SAN, Mark highlighted that the review process reflects contemporary realities, strengthens internal democracy, and promotes transparency and accountability within the ADC. He expressed encouragement that the process involved wide consultations across states, zones, and critical stakeholders, reinforcing the belief that the ADC belongs to all members, regardless of status or position.
Call for Discipline and Credible Alternatives
Mark stressed that no constitution can substitute for discipline, loyalty, and commitment among party members. "At this critical juncture, Nigerians are looking for credible alternatives—parties that are organized, principled, and people-oriented. The ADC must continue to position itself as that viable platform," he declared, underscoring the party's readiness to address the failures of the APC and offer a fresh political direction.
Inclusive Process and National Significance
Earlier, the Constitution Review Committee chairman, Etigwe Uwa SAN, explained that the review addressed innovations and departures from the original document, describing it as not merely a party assignment but a national one. "We aimed to fashion a constitution that could serve as a model for others and address issues that have long plagued Nigeria's political party system," he said.
Uwa detailed the inclusive nature of the process, noting that submissions were received from a diverse range of stakeholders, including:
- Party members at various levels
- Civil society groups and women's associations
- Persons with disabilities and international organizations
He emphasized that every submission was carefully reviewed to strengthen ownership and confidence in the process, highlighting the crucial role political parties play in leadership selection. Uwa asserted that a strong and functional party system is central to producing capable leaders and providing Nigerians with credible choices at the polls, directly responding to the current dissatisfaction with the APC's governance.
