President Bola Tinubu will deliver a national broadcast on Friday, June 12, 2025, to mark this year’s Democracy Day, his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, has announced.
Broadcast Details
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Onanuga, the President’s address will be aired on all major television and radio stations across the country at 7 a.m. on Friday.
The broadcast is part of activities lined up to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
Theme of the Address
Onanuga said the President will speak on the achievements of his administration in the past two years and outline his vision for the remaining years of his tenure.
He will also highlight the challenges facing the nation and how his government is tackling them, including economic reforms, security issues, and anti-corruption efforts.
Democracy Day Significance
Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 to honor the historic 1993 presidential election, which was widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, and to mark the return to civilian rule in 1999.
President Tinubu had earlier declared June 12 as a public holiday to allow Nigerians to participate in the celebrations.
Expectations
Political analysts expect the President to use the occasion to reassure Nigerians of his commitment to democratic principles and good governance.
Opposition parties have also called on the President to address pressing national issues, including the rising cost of living and insecurity in parts of the country.
