Democracy remains best form of government: Kumo

The Chief Whip of the 10th House of Representatives and member representing Akko Federal Constituency, Hon. Usman Kumo, has affirmed that democracy remains the most effective system of government despite its imperfections, as Nigerians marked the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

In a statement issued by his Media Unit on Friday, Kumo congratulated President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, governors, and all Nigerians on the country's democratic progress. He described June 12 as a historic reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots, activists, and civil society leaders in the struggle for democratic governance.

“Democracy is not perfect, but it remains the best system of government for giving every Nigerian a voice, regardless of tribe, religion or social status,” he said.

The lawmaker noted that Nigeria's 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule since 1999 represents a significant achievement that must be safeguarded through respect for the rule of law, political tolerance, and active citizen participation.

Kumo also commended the administration of Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for what he described as remarkable achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agriculture since assuming office in 2019.

“Governor Inuwa Yahaya has shown that purposeful leadership can bring tangible democratic dividends to the people. Gombe State today stands as a model of good governance and inclusive development,” he stated.

Highlighting his own record in Akko Federal Constituency, the Chief Whip reaffirmed his commitment to delivering people-centred projects and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of constituents. According to him, ongoing and completed interventions in infrastructure, education, healthcare, youth and women empowerment, as well as job facilitation initiatives, are designed to expand economic opportunities and promote inclusive development across the constituency.

Kumo stressed that democracy must translate into improved living standards through better roads, quality education, accessible healthcare, and opportunities for young people and women. He further pledged continued support for legislative measures that strengthen democratic institutions, advance electoral reforms, and improve representation.

The lawmaker urged young Nigerians to participate actively in politics and civic engagement, while calling for unity, peace, and support for ongoing reforms under the Tinubu administration.

“Democracy is a collective responsibility. As we celebrate today, let us renew our commitment to Nigeria's unity and to building a country where every citizen can live with dignity and hope,” he said.
