Fayose Forecasts ADC's Collapse Without Peter Obi in 2027
Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has issued a stark prediction regarding the future of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that the party faces imminent collapse if Peter Obi does not secure its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections. Speaking to Channels Television on the sidelines of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention in Abuja, Fayose emphasized Obi's pivotal role in the political landscape, suggesting that the ADC's survival hinges on his candidacy.
Doubts Over Political Alignments and Obi's Prospects
Fayose expressed skepticism about the shifting alliances within Nigeria's opposition parties ahead of the 2027 polls. He highlighted that while Obi made a significant impact in the 2023 elections as the Labour Party candidate, his influence may not translate into the next electoral cycle without strategic positioning. Fayose questioned whether Obi could return as a vice presidential candidate, noting that Atiku Abubakar might clinch the PDP ticket, and dismissed the possibility of Obi rejoining the Labour Party due to existing political wedges.
"If Obi is not on the ballot of ADC, that is the end of ADC. It looks like that now that Obi will not be on the ballot," Fayose asserted, underscoring his belief that Obi's personal appeal outweighs party strength. He argued that Obi's 2023 performance was driven more by his individual charisma than by party machinery, suggesting that even if Obi moved to another party like Accord, he could still make a substantial impact.
PDP National Convention Draws Thousands Amid Reconciliation Efforts
The remarks came during the PDP's national convention in Abuja, which attracted over 2,000 delegates from across Nigeria. The event, organized by the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee, took place at the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, with delegates dressed in party colours undergoing accreditation under tight security. Chairman of the convention planning committee and former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu confirmed that reconciliation efforts would continue despite the absence of some party leaders, as the PDP seeks to resolve internal disputes ahead of future elections.
Fayose also criticized Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his conduct within the All Progressives Congress (APC), drawing comparisons to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's posture under President Bola Tinubu. This adds to the broader context of political maneuvering as parties gear up for 2027.
In summary, Fayose's prediction highlights the volatile nature of Nigerian politics, with the ADC's fate seemingly tied to Peter Obi's decisions, while the PDP works to mend internal rifts and position itself for the upcoming electoral battle.
