The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate this year's Eid-ul-Mawlid, which marks the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The announcement was made on Friday through a press release signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Mary Ali, in Abuja.
Minister Announces Holiday on Behalf of FG
Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government. He extended warm felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, emphasizing the significance of the occasion. Tunji-Ojo stated, "Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others. These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them."
Call for Reflection and National Unity
The Minister added that the period should also serve as a time for collective prayer for the peace and cohesion of the country. He noted that national unity remains a shared responsibility, urging all citizens to observe the celebration with restraint and mutual respect. Tunji-Ojo wished the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid, while also restating the resolve of the present administration to safeguard lives and property across the country and ensure peace is maintained at all times.
