According to the ministry, the following groups are not required to sit the test:
- Children under 16 years old.
- People unable to take the test due to illness, disability, or age.
- Graduates of German schools or holders of degrees from German higher education institutions in law, social sciences, political science, or administrative sciences.
- Individuals who entered Germany under a labour recruitment agreement on or before 30 June 1974.
- Contract workers who arrived in the German Democratic Republic on or before 13 June 1990.
In the last two cases, the exemption also extends to a spouse who joined the applicant shortly after their arrival in Germany.
How the Test Works
The naturalisation test consists of 33 questions, three of which are specific to the German state where the applicant resides. Each question has four answer options, and candidates must answer at least 17 correctly to pass. The test assesses knowledge of Germany's legal system, society, and living conditions.
