Think Tank Advocates Regional Cooperation to Drive Sustainable Development in Nigeria
In a recent webinar hosted by the Think Tank for Sustainable Development (TTTSD) in Abuja, Dr. Sam Amadi delivered a keynote address calling for Nigeria to embrace an inclusive model of regional cooperation to foster sustainable development. He emphasized that empowering the country's six geopolitical regions—South-South, South-East, South-West, North-Central, North-East, and North-West—to innovate and utilize their unique resources could significantly stimulate national growth and improve socio-economic outcomes.
Leveraging Regional Strengths for National Progress
Dr. Amadi argued that a development approach tailored to each region's peculiar strengths and priorities is essential. He pointed to countries like China as successful examples, where diverse regions have been allowed to develop through innovation and resourcefulness, contributing substantially to overall economic advancement. By adopting similar strategies, Nigeria can better manage its diversity and harness comparative advantages across different areas.
Key Pillars for Sustainable Development
Amadi stressed that meaningful socio-economic and sustainable development in Nigeria hinges on several critical factors. These include the government's respect for the social contract between the state and citizens, the restoration of public trust, the promotion of social justice, and the entrenchment of ethical governance. He insisted that strengthened regional development initiatives are vital to achieving these goals and driving long-term progress.
Webinar Highlights and Future Initiatives
The webinar, the first in a planned series, attracted a diverse audience from the diaspora, media, academia, and civil society organizations. In his opening remarks, the event's chairman, General Chris Abutu Garba (Rtd), noted that the discussion comes at a crucial time as Nigeria faces escalating security and developmental challenges, particularly with general elections on the horizon. He emphasized that sustained policy dialogues like this one can yield practical solutions and help guide citizens in making informed choices during upcoming electoral processes.
The Think Tank for Sustainable Development announced that subsequent webinars will be held periodically as part of ongoing efforts to promote evidence-based dialogue and national development. This initiative aims to foster collaborative efforts and innovative strategies to address Nigeria's pressing issues through regional cooperation and inclusive governance.
