Group Urges Tinubu to Strengthen Nigeria's Democracy

The Christian Conscience, a non-denominational organisation, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently implement measures aimed at strengthening and safeguarding Nigeria's democracy. The group made this appeal on Friday in Lagos, emphasising that the strength of democracy lies in the participation of the people, which must be driven by national progress.

Democracy Day Message

Congratulating Nigerians on Democracy Day, the organisation urged citizens to continue holding political leaders accountable while reminding the government to prioritise the welfare of the people. The group highlighted the lessons from the June 12 struggle, stating that leadership is crucial but followership determines the tone.

In a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Yetunde Akinluyi, and National Secretary, Dr. Kolawole Verrals, the group said: "We congratulate Nigerians on this year's Democracy Day celebration. However, we must continue to remind our political leaders of their responsibility to govern with the interest of the ordinary citizen at heart."

Basic Needs of Nigerians

The group noted that Nigerians are not demanding extraordinary things from their leaders but only basic necessities for a decent life. "All Nigerians desire is a good quality of life, affordable housing, motorable roads, accessible and affordable healthcare, quality education, and adequate security that allow people to move freely and conduct their lawful businesses without fear," the statement read.

It added that Nigerians are resilient people who need only basic needs. When those needs are met, they contribute positively to national development and go about their daily activities in peace.

Warning Against Inequality

The Christian Conscience warned that democracy could be endangered when there is a wide gap between the living conditions of political leaders and those of the citizens they were elected to serve. It urged political leaders to commit to national interest rather than living in affluence while the people suffer hardship.

According to the group, the foundations of democracy become weakened under such circumstances, risking social unrest. It therefore called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of all Nigerians still held captive by bandits.

"This cannot be done in isolation but inclusive of all. Crime has no ethnicity. Also, Nigerians must stay to build, not abandon the 'ship' and lament," the group concluded.
