MURIC Condemns CAN's Stance on Security Crisis
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a strong response to recent positions taken by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), warning that the religious body's characterization of Nigeria's security challenges as a Christian genocide poses significant threats to national cohesion. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC expressed grave concern about CAN's acceptance of calls for potential foreign military involvement in Nigeria's internal affairs.
Foreign Intervention: A Dangerous Path
The Islamic organization specifically criticized CAN members for supporting appeals for United States intervention, referencing petitions and individuals who have backed such moves. MURIC highlighted that this approach demonstrates disregard for national interest and shows limited understanding of the consequences faced by other nations previously invaded by American forces. The group pointed to older comments from a former CAN president that remain unwithdrawn as evidence of this concerning pattern.
MURIC further emphasized that CAN's recent announcement of a one-day national prayer specifically against Christian genocide continues to frame Nigeria's insecurity along sectarian lines, rather than addressing it as a national crisis affecting citizens of all faiths. The organization argued that this selective narrative risks deepening existing religious divisions at a time when the country faces widespread violent crimes impacting Muslims and Christians alike.
Rising Extremism and Call for Restraint
The Muslim rights group warned that such rhetoric could trigger extreme reactions, citing a viral video where a cleric prayed for the arrival of American troops as an example of escalating religious intolerance. MURIC cautioned that foreign intervention could radicalize young Muslims who have maintained peaceful conduct over the years, potentially reversing years of interfaith dialogue and coexistence efforts.
In its concluding remarks, MURIC urged Nigerian Muslims to disregard provocations and continue promoting peace. The organization called on all citizens to pray for national stability and economic improvement while specifically appealing for divine wisdom for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he navigates the country's difficult security climate.
