The Nigerian political and business elite converged on Lagos for a solemn evening of remembrance, honouring the life and service of Segun Awolowo, the late grandson of the revered Premier of the Western Region, Obafemi Awolowo. The event, held at Harbour Point on Victoria Island, was a powerful testament to the enduring respect held for the Awolowo family and the impactful legacy of the former Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) CEO, who passed away on November 20, 2025, at the age of 62.

The memorial service drew a distinguished crowd, reflecting Awolowo's wide-reaching influence across various sectors of national life. Among the prominent figures in attendance were the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. They were joined by Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who sent a heartfelt tribute. Former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, was also present, offering condolences to the bereaved family.

In her message, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala recalled her long professional association with Segun Awolowo. She praised his unwavering dedication to advancing Nigeria's export sector and driving critical trade reforms, stating that while his passing leaves a deep void, the lasting legacy of his work endures.
Femi Gbajabiamila eulogised the deceased as a brilliant technocrat and a consummate bridge-builder who served the nation with immense dignity. He emphasised that Nigeria and the broader African continent have lost a true patriot, creating a significant gap that will be hard to fill.
Professor Yemi Osinbajo highlighted Awolowo's conscious and tireless choice of a life in public service. He noted that Awolowo's exceptional work ethic and sterling character distinctly set him apart as a dedicated servant of the people.

Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, encouraged the Awolowo family to find strength in the overwhelming and sincere testimonies shared, which vividly painted a picture of a life lived with purpose and impact.
James Ibori offered words of solace to Awolowo's widow, Bola, urging her to take comfort in the glowing memories of her husband's life. The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) issued a statement mourning his loss, recognising him as a champion of intra-African trade and a pivotal force behind the success of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF). This widespread acknowledgment from both national and international bodies underscores the significant mark Segun Awolowo left on Nigeria's economic landscape.
