Otti Lists 414 Completed Roads, Highlights Three-Year Gains

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has credited his administration's achievements over the past three years to prudent financial management, accountability, and a deliberate commitment to restoring the dignity and welfare of the people. Speaking at the grand finale of activities marking his third anniversary in office, Otti stated that the remarkable progress recorded across critical sectors resulted from disciplined governance, responsible deployment of public resources, and an unwavering focus on citizens' needs. The celebration, held at the Umuahia Township Stadium, featured a parade, guard of honour, and ceremonial salute by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, drawing government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, and residents from across the state.

Visible and Measurable Achievements

In his welcome address, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, described the anniversary as an opportunity to showcase what he called the administration's visible and measurable achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, youth empowerment, security, and urban renewal. According to him, the Otti administration has restored public confidence in government, rekindled hope among residents, and positioned Abia as an attractive destination for investors through transparent, accountable, and compassionate leadership.

Third Anniversary Address

Delivering his third year anniversary address titled Dignity, Public Welfare and Accountability, Governor Otti reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining policies that place citizens at the centre of governance while ensuring the responsible management of public funds. He noted that fiscal discipline had remained the cornerstone of his administration's success, enabling the government to invest heavily in infrastructure and social services without compromising financial stability. We have managed to reduce the state's debt burden by more than 70 per cent as of March 2026, the governor stated. Independent observers consistently rank Abia among the leading states in fiscal sustainability, accountability and transparency.

Infrastructure Milestones

Otti disclosed that despite limited resources and increasing developmental demands, his administration had completed 414 road projects spanning over 800 kilometres across the state within three years. He further revealed that an additional 82 road projects covering more than 200 kilometres were nearing completion and would soon be commissioned for public use. Among the flagship projects completed by the administration, he listed the reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road and Ohanku Road in Aba, the six-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard in Umuahia, the historic Omenuko Bridge, and the final section of the Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Abiriba-Ohafia Road. The governor said these projects had significantly improved connectivity, enhanced economic activities, and opened up communities to new opportunities.

Healthcare and Education

In the healthcare sector, Otti said the state allocates about 15 per cent of its annual budget to health services, resulting in the recruitment and deployment of nearly 1,000 healthcare professionals to primary, secondary, and tertiary health institutions across Abia State. He added that the administration had embarked on a comprehensive programme to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services, especially in rural communities. On education, the governor disclosed that no less than 20 per cent of the state's annual budget is devoted to the sector. He said 5,394 teachers had already been recruited, while arrangements had been concluded to engage an additional 4,000 teachers to meet rising enrolment figures in public schools. According to him, the recruitment drive is aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning while ensuring that every child in the state has access to quality education.

Youth Empowerment and Security

Highlighting efforts in youth development, Otti said the government had invested heavily in technology-driven programmes focused on software engineering, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity training to prepare young people for opportunities in the digital economy. He announced that more than N300 million had been set aside to support innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology-based enterprises across the state. The governor also pointed to the regular payment of salaries and pensions as evidence of his administration's commitment to workers' welfare and social stability. On security, he said sustained collaboration with security agencies, traditional institutions, and community stakeholders had strengthened the state's security architecture, leading to significant improvements in the protection of lives and property.

Looking Ahead

As his administration enters its fourth year, Otti assured residents that the government would deepen ongoing reforms, strengthen institutions, expand economic opportunities, and continue delivering projects and programmes that improve the quality of life of Abians. The journey is far from over, he said. We remain committed to building a prosperous, secure and inclusive Abia where every citizen can realise his or her full potential. The third year anniversary celebration also featured goodwill messages from political leaders, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders, who commended the governor for what they described as his transformational leadership and developmental strides across the state.
