PDP Faction Ratifies Congresses Nationwide, Strengthening Party Structures
A significant faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially ratified its ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses across Nigeria. This crucial step was taken during the 2026 PDP National Convention held in Abuja, following a motion presented by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.
Delegates at the convention unanimously adopted the motion, as reported by TVC News, validating party structures in numerous states and reinforcing internal reorganisation ahead of upcoming electoral activities. The ratification process is seen as essential for consolidating the PDP's democratic foundations and ensuring party discipline.
Senator Natasha Emphasises Unity and Institutional Stability
While moving the motion before thousands of party stakeholders, Senator Natasha highlighted the importance of unity, legality, and institutional stability within the PDP. She stated that the decision was not merely procedural but a reaffirmation of the party's commitment to internal democracy and respect for due process.
"Today's decision is not merely procedural; it is a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to internal democracy, party discipline, and respect for due process," she said. "The PDP remains a party governed by rules, consultations, and the will of its members at all levels."
Congress Ratifications Across States
The motion sought approval to ratify congresses conducted in several states, based on resolutions from the National Executive Committee (NEC) and recommendations from the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC). Congresses in states such as Abia, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Niger, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were formally endorsed.
Additionally, the convention approved repeat congresses in states including Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara. This comprehensive ratification aims to streamline party operations and enhance cohesion.
Natasha Names Nyesom Wike as PDP National Leader
In a significant development, Senator Natasha identified Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as the national leader of the PDP. Speaking at the factional convention, she acknowledged Wike's role, stating, "Standing on the dignified protocol already laid, and with special recognition to our national leader of our great party, the PDP, His Excellency Nyesom Wike."
This announcement comes ahead of the party's primaries and the 2027 general elections, positioning Wike as a key figure in the PDP's leadership structure. The move is expected to influence party dynamics and strategic planning for future electoral contests.
Background and Implications
Earlier reports indicated that Wike had urged the PDP to respect court judgments regarding the party's national convention, emphasising legal compliance. The ratification of congresses and the appointment of a national leader are seen as steps towards resolving internal crises and fostering unity within the party.
As the PDP prepares for the 2027 elections, these developments highlight efforts to strengthen internal democracy and consolidate support. The party's ability to maintain stability and coherence will be critical in its bid to compete effectively in upcoming political engagements.
