Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the recent public confrontation between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval officer, describing the incident as a national embarrassment that reflects deeper institutional problems in Nigeria.

The political drama unfolded on Tuesday, November 11, when videos surfaced online showing the FCT minister engaged in a heated argument with Lieutenant A.M. Yerima at a site in Abuja. The footage captured Wike stepping in to separate his security detail from military personnel as tensions escalated at the location.
In his official response posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, November 12, the 64-year-old opposition leader expressed deep concern about the incident. Obi stated that the confrontation represents yet another unfortunate reflection of the growing institutional disorder plaguing the country.
Obi's Critical Questions About the Incident
The former Anambra state governor raised several crucial questions about the proper boundaries between civil and military authorities. Should the military be used for purely civil operations? Obi questioned, adding If proper protocols were in place, should a Minister's intervention in such a matter be in such an indecorous manner?
He emphasized the need for clear separation between administrative authority and the duties of security agencies, suggesting that the incident highlighted systemic failures in Nigeria's governance structure.
